This species is currently in the proposed NF3EAWS. It has been reported to be extinct in the Santchou Wildlife Reserve. Hopes are still high to restore their population in the Santchou Wildlife Reserve. An African forest elephant ecological connectivity and tracking project is being designed to support the restoration of the dwindling population of this wildlife species
